So here we are on Tobacco Row. Duke lacrosse players are feeling hurt that they were thrown through the ringer by N.C. District Attorney Mike Nifong. This miserable man raked them through the coals, putting their futures in jeopardy by automatically assuming that the kids were guilty.
Well, no, they weren't. Trust me, I've done a lot of crazy stuff as a frat boy, but nothing near what went on at Duke. But this stripper put herself in a bad situation with a bunch of out of control party animals. Whose to blame? Nobody.
But let's take a look at the media. We all jumped on the case. Black woman, rich white boys, rape allegations, lacrosse? Now that is something to drool over.
Reporters live for this, as we should. But is it the reporter's fault that this was turned into a circus? No.
I blame the columnists I blame the Black activists. I blame those who plucked something out of the air and made it their own.
Has Rev. Al of Jesse come out and apologized? Of course not. That would mean they were wrong. Have any of the columnists apologized for burying these guys on partial evidence? No way!
This was a story that everybody wanted to cover, but didn't want to get to know the truth. As a reporter, I do everything possible to find the truth before printing anything. It's our jobs. We owe it to you, our readers.
The reporters on the case could have done a little more "off-the-record" reporting in order to put this story in perspective. But that doesn't sell papers. We hate thinking that's true, but it is. Grab the attention fast, bring the reader in, then get to the truth. Sad.
But those with opinions should be eating crow right now. Are they?
